Replacing an Aqua One 102s Foam Sponge Pad
The Aqua one 102s foam sponge pad helps trap particles of solid waste as well as providing a home to essential nitrifying bacteria. It's essential not to rinse this sponge pad under the tap as this will kill off the good bacteria. Rather, rinse in a little aquarium water. Over time, the condition of the 102s Sponge Pad will deteriorate and it will become necessary to replace, although this can typically be once every 6 to 12 months. The 102c Ceramic cartridge however should be replaced every 16 weeks and the 1c Carbon and Wool Cartridge more frequently at 4 to 6 weeks. It's usually best practice not to change all the cartridges at the same time as this results in too great a loss of good bacteria and can lead to imbalances in your tank.

With their slot-in filter cartridges, it's really easy to maintain your new Aqua One Xpression aquarium. Simply follow the Aqua One Xpression Series instructions for best results.
As you'd expect, the sponge pad is ideal for trapping smaller particles of solid waste and thereby protects the ceramic 102c Cartridge from becoming clogged. Water always attempts to take the easiest path through a filter so the 15ppi sponge pad not only neatly contains the waste material, but also ensures that water is evenly distributed throughout the cartridge making the most efficient use of the available filter area. Water then leaves the sponge pad in an even, efficient manner.
Beneficial Bacteria
Although Aqua One 102s Foam Sponge Pads are mainly designed to trap solid waste, they also have the secondary beneift of providing a home to beneficial, nitrifying bacteria so often sought after by the fish keeper. Without this foam spong pad, the 102c Ceramic Cartridge would become clogged.
102s Sponge Pads will usually last between 6 and 12 months but it's worth checking on their performance every month. Just slide out the pad and check it's condition. Never wash the Sponge Pad under the tap as this will kill off the essential bacteria. Instead it can be rinsed in a little aquarium water and some pieces of debris removed by hand.
Change every 6 to 12 months
While the 102s Foam Sponge pads only need changing every 6 to 12 months, the 1c Carbon & Wool cartridge should be replaced every 6 weeks. The 102c Ceramic Cartridge should be changed ever 16 weeks. Again, never be tempted to rinse these items under a tap. If clogged use a little aquarium water, or replace as necessary.
