Some of our customers call these fine polymer wool pads 'polishing pads' because that's what they do: they 'polish' your aquarium water by removing the finest solid waste particles, particles that other, coarser filter media just miss. You don't need a lot of such fine filtration, just enough to put a fine shine of clarity on your set up, just a final glassy finish to make every thing look its best.
Naturally filter pads this fine just don't last and they are too fine to rinse out (you risk damaging your filter by using old, clogged up media.) so, every time you clean the canister out just throw the dirty polymer wool pad in the bin and fit a single, clean, white fresh one. Its a really small amount of cost and effort to keep your set up looking its best.
